DESCRIPTION :
A GASKET IS A MATERIAL, OR A SUBSTANCE OR MATERIAL MIXTURE, PLACED BETWEEN TWO MECHANICAL JOINTS THAT CAN BE SEPARATED. GASKETS' PRIMARY PURPOSE IS TO TEMPORARILY STOP LEAKS FROM OCCURRING. AFTER THE GASKET CONNECTION LEAKS, THE GASKET CAN STILL BE REPLACED.
A PRESSURIZED FLUID IS CONTAINED BETWEEN TWO SURFACES OF AN OBJECT, AND GASKETS ARE FITTED BETWEEN THOSE SURFACES TO STOP LEAKS. INTERMEDIATE COMPONENTS ARE NEEDED FOR JOINING TWO OBJECT SURFACES, PARTICULARLY WHEN INSTALLING MACHINE PARTS. THIS ELEMENT ACTS AS THE CONNECTION'S SEAL. DUE TO THE TWO ENGINE COMPONENTS' ROUGH SURFACES, THIS SEAL IS REQUIRED TO PREVENT LEAKING. TO STOP LEAKS, THIS GASKET WILL SERVE AS AN INTERMEDIARY PART.
BECAUSE THE PACKING MUST ALWAYS BE LUBRICATED AND THE REQUIRED LEAKAGE TO MAINTAIN LUBRICATION IS ROUGHLY 40 TO 60 DROPS PER MINUTE, THE JOB OF THE PACKING IS TO REGULATE LEAKAGE, NOT TO PREVENT ALL LEAKS. THE WAY THE PACKING IS LUBRICATED IS DETERMINED BY THE PRESSURE IN THE STUFFING BOX AS WELL AS THE STATE OF THE FLUID BEING PUSHED. WHEN THE PRESSURIZED LIQUID IS PURE AND NON-CORROSIVE AND THE STUFFING BOX PRESSURE IS GREATER THAN ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE. THIS INSULATOR, ALSO KNOWN AS GLAND PACKING, COMPRESSION PACKING, OR PACKING, WAS DESIGNED AS A SEALING DEVICE (BLOCKING DEVICE), ALTHOUGH IT IS MORE PROPERLY DESCRIBED TO AS A RESTRICTIONAL DEVICE BECAUSE IT MUST DRIP.
