AN INSULATION JACKET IS AN OUTER BOUNDARY LAYER THAT IS APPLIED AS THE MAIN PROTECTIVE LAYER TO A METAL SURFACE THAT IS PRONE TO CORROSION IN ORDER TO PREVENT DIRECT CONTACT WITH SUBSTANCES THAT CAN CAUSE CORROSION, SUCH AS WATER OR OTHER CHEMICALS, AS WELL AS TO OFFER THERMAL PROTECTION.
SEVERAL PROTECTIVE MATERIALS, USUALLY METAL, ARE USED TO MAKE INSULATION JACKETS. METAL JACKETING IS THE PROCESS OF USING OTHER METALS AS SACRIFICIAL ANODES TO SHIELD THE BASE METAL. THE BASE MATERIAL IS KEPT DRY AND UNHARMED BY OBSTRUCTING THE FLOW OF IONS AND FREE ENERGY. ADDITIONALLY, SPECIFIC JACKETS MAY BE CREATED TO OFFER FIRE PROTECTION.
